GARDENERS' WORLD Headline News - After years of research,a North Wales amateur gardener has perfeted a new strain of brassica which he has called the 'Lacewing', due to its uncanny resemblance to the wings of that beautiful beneficial pest control that is the scourge of the greenhouse aphid, the lacewing. Another research project underway this year is the KARAOKE CARROT. So called due to the accidental discovery that certain varieties of carrot emit a shrill sound when pulled from the ground, very similar to that of the Mandrake root, as seen in some of the Harry Potter series of film It is unfortunte, that the sound can only be heard through specilist ultrasonic headphones. As each variety emits it own unique and different sound pitch, it is hoped that when research is completed that a Karaoke Carrot concert can be performed. Future developments will be notified here. Watch this space.

Wood-Carving Group starting up - read on -
Abergele Men's Shed will be starting a wood-carving group on Thursday 24th August at the Shed at the rear of Itaca between 10am and 12noon on a weekly basis. If you already do carving, why not pop long and show us what you can do, bring an example or two. Please bring your own wood-carving gouges with you as we only have a limited number as of yet.
This is not a general meeting, but specifically for wood carving, although enyone is welcome to come along. There will not be any use of machinery, so it will be peaceful apart from the usual banter and the sound of the kettle boiling.
The photos here illustrate some examples of what we hope to achieve and much more, limited only by the imagination. Come along and don't be shy.

Abergele Men's Shed would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to Mr David Baddeley, formerly of Colwyn Bay and currently of Stone in the West Midlands for his generous donation of large woodworking power tools to the Abergl Men's Shed, via the Colwyn Bay Men's Shed. Inter-group co-opertion is a great thing to have and experience. Good luck with the narrow boat refurbishmeent, David.

The latest project goes a long way towards creating more space in the Shed, but constructing two work benches. Most of the credit for their construction must go to our resident machinist, Doug and his assistant Mike. Others did haave a finger in the pie, but they are now both complete and in situ. the cupboard space below the work surfae can be utilised for storage of tools or materials and there i enough space for a middle shelf should this be required in the future. Does your workshop need a new workbench or storage space? We are open to construct bespoke workbenches for anyone who so wishes, at a reasonable price, of course. We are now ready to move on to our next project, the construction of Victorian garden planters. and at some stage another garden bench on a commission.

We are still open for business on three days a week, each from 10am to 12noon, on a Monday, Tuesday and a Wednesday. come along and get stuck in or just enjoy the banter and a cuppa. There is currently no membership fee to pay, although the a contibution to the tea/coffee kitty will not go amiss.

Various projects are now well under way. Here we see a brief selection of what went on at the Shed today, Wednesday 24th May.

The first event was training and practice on the Compound Mitre Saw. Secondly, our resident machinist, Doug, was illustrating the preparation on making a globe finial to go on a future project, that of manufacturing Victorian style planters for the garden. The image also shows the partially constructed workbench, of which we will make two initially, which is awaiting the delivery of timber to complete the job. The final picture is that of Doug demonstrating the techniques and Health and Safety issues of using a wood-turning lathe. I have never had the opportunity to use or learn lathe work, but today I had a go at turning one of the Victorian Planter finials, or at least to get the basic shape started.

Abergele men's Shed is now opening on a Tuesdsy morning as well as Mondays and Wednesdays, between 10am and 12 noon.

Why not come along and join us for a cuppa, biscuit and a chat with a chance to learn new skills and meet like-minded men. We all get along and there is some great new company to meet and befriend. Cheers, see you there.
