Men's Sheds Cymru

Every single person who hears about the Men's Sheds movement immediately confirms that it is a wonderful thing. If you're not personally interested we can guarantee that you know someone or have somebody close to you that would love the opportunity to be part of a Men's Shed. So what exactly is a Men's Shed? Essentially it is a Social Enterprise set up by Men for Men, and it's all about tackling the growing problem of isolation in our male population. There are a great deal of men out there with lots of time on their hands and a great deal still to offer. This is a chance for men within communities to come together, join or set up a Shed of their own and enjoy being around other males, talking, dreaming, playing, planning, creating, fixing, building, changing and growing. No two sheds are the same and what goes on in a shed is determined by the people who belong to it. A Shed is it's own unique, self supporting social enterprise with its own governance, constitution and ethos. There are currently around 2000 sheds in Australia, 200 sheds in Ireland and many emerging sheds across Europe. We, as the Association of Wales are here to support existing Sheds and Shedders, Advocate the potential of new Sheds and support those who wish to join or start Sheds. The model promotes "health by stealth" and generally enhances the well-being of all males involved who gain a sense of belonging and purpose, feel useful, connected and a part of their community again. Sheds are outward facing and often engage in activity that benefits the areas they're in. Its a win-win situation. So, there it is in a nutshell. The movement is new to Wales and this is a period of enormous potential and rapid growth. Be a part of it! Shed happens. Get in touch with us to find a shed near you.... if there isn't one, we'll help you start one! We're looking forward to hearing from you. Team Men's Sheds Cymru.

We are tying to find out what kind of boat is in the painting. Can you tell us? Could you build a scale model of it or even a full size replica?

Lakes are being restored by The National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire. The painting depicts the boat used on the lakes and they would like to re-create it.

If this is a project you would like to be part of, let us know.

A wonderful short video from the lads at Preseli Men's Shed in Pembrokeshire giving a little flavour of what they do and why they do it. Outstanding work fellas...just shows what can be achieved when we stand 'shoulder to shoulder'.

September is Vascular Disease Awareness Month and Men’s Sheds Cymru is pleased to support the campaign, by raising awareness of the Wales Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (WAAASP).

Throughout the month, every Shed will receive a special hard copy Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Resource Pack, containing useful information about the condition and the importance of attending for NHS AAA screening. Some will be posted others delivered by hand.
Please keep a look out for your special pack, which will also include posters and leaflets which can be displayed in your Shed. Can I ask for your help in ensuring this information is available to all ‘shed’ members.

Free AAA screening talks and information stands can also be arranged, if members would like to find out more about this important health test. Just let me know and I can make arrangements for you.

A Facebook Live Question and Answer Session will be held on Monday 25th September at Midday. Rhodri Walters, Men’s Sheds Project Manager will be discussing AAA with Public Health Wales. If you have any questions about the AAA screening programme you would like asked, then please email them to me, putting ‘Facebook Live’ as the subject of the email. Alternatively, log onto our Facebook page on Monday 25th September and join in the conversation.

An AAA is a swelling of the aorta, which is the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the body, and there is a risk that an AAA may split or rupture. There is a high risk of dying from a ruptured AAA, so finding an aneurysm early gives you the best chance of treatment and survival.
Men aged 65 are invited for a one-off ultrasound scan. Men over the age of 65 can request to be screened.

Further information about AAA screening can be found at: www.aaascreening.wales.nhs.uk

Taking part in AAA screening is an individual’s choice, so let’s get together in the Sheds, and make sure that men know about the importance of attending for an AAA test. Attending for your AAA test could reduce your risk of dying from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.
