Men's Sheds Cymru

Every single person who hears about the Men's Sheds movement immediately confirms that it is a wonderful thing. If you're not personally interested we can guarantee that you know someone or have somebody close to you that would love the opportunity to be part of a Men's Shed. So what exactly is a Men's Shed? Essentially it is a Social Enterprise set up by Men for Men, and it's all about tackling the growing problem of isolation in our male population. There are a great deal of men out there with lots of time on their hands and a great deal still to offer. This is a chance for men within communities to come together, join or set up a Shed of their own and enjoy being around other males, talking, dreaming, playing, planning, creating, fixing, building, changing and growing. No two sheds are the same and what goes on in a shed is determined by the people who belong to it. A Shed is it's own unique, self supporting social enterprise with its own governance, constitution and ethos. There are currently around 2000 sheds in Australia, 200 sheds in Ireland and many emerging sheds across Europe. We, as the Association of Wales are here to support existing Sheds and Shedders, Advocate the potential of new Sheds and support those who wish to join or start Sheds. The model promotes "health by stealth" and generally enhances the well-being of all males involved who gain a sense of belonging and purpose, feel useful, connected and a part of their community again. Sheds are outward facing and often engage in activity that benefits the areas they're in. Its a win-win situation. So, there it is in a nutshell. The movement is new to Wales and this is a period of enormous potential and rapid growth. Be a part of it! Shed happens. Get in touch with us to find a shed near you.... if there isn't one, we'll help you start one! We're looking forward to hearing from you. Team Men's Sheds Cymru.

RVS / Asda Foundation Sheds Grant Fund Opens for Applications
Shedders urged to apply for funding to support their Shed spaces

The RVS / Asda Foundation Sheds Grant Fund opens again on Monday 17th July for applications to help support the set-up of community based, member-run Shed spaces.

Older people’s charity Royal Voluntary Service, with funding from the Asda Foundation, run the Sheds Grant Fund to provide small scale funding to Sheds who are looking for help with either set up or next stage development costs.
The Sheds Grant Fund is ran in conjunction with the four national Shed Associations representing and supporting Sheds in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – and as our members, we encourage you to have a look at the fund, if you have not already done so.

Jo Phillips, Sheds Project Manager at Royal Voluntary Service said: “We know that each Shed is unique due to its location and the activities that the members want to undertake in the space. Whether it is for woodworking, gardening, model making, weaving or electronics, we are delighted to be able to give a helping hand to local communities who want to get a community based Shed up and running.”

Julie Ward, Manager of the Asda Foundation said: “The Asda Foundation is one of the many ways we can give something back to our local communities. That’s why we lend a hand to a wide range of good causes with which our colleagues are involved with, sharing their passion and helping to make a difference through a variety of projects across the UK. We see the Sheds programme as making a real difference at a grassroots level and are proud to support this initiative.”

Since 2016, 45 Sheds across the country have been awarded funding to kick start or grow their ambitions.
Knighton Men’s Shed in Wales was awarded funds in early 2017. John Thorogood, Chair said - "The grant from the RVS Sheds Grant Fund has enabled us to keep our rented premises going. It also enabled us to purchase advertising and promotional materials to highlight who we are and what we do whilst attending local Carnivals, fetes and shows selling our hand made products and recruiting new members.”
Connor Sweeney from Rostrevor Men’s Shed in Co Down, said “The funds allow the Shedders to embark in using a whole new range of products, and will enable the men to learn new skills that they could not have had before without the funding to purchase these machines."
Mark Guildford, Chair of York Men's Shed said “The grant enabled us to obtain first aid supplies, training and insurance for our shed. It has been a long journey, but support from organisations such as the RVS / Asda Foundation Sheds Grant Fund have helped us bring the Men's Shed program to our city."

Grants of between £250 and £1,000 are available from the Sheds Grant Fund. All applications need to come from constituted, volunteer led community groups and must be submitted by the deadline of 5pm Sunday 24th September to be considered. Funding is for Sheds in the first / early stages of set up – preference will be given to those within the first 18 months.

A fine meat feast down in Treorchy this afternoon (with a side salad of Doddy Fixers into the bargain)...was an absolute delight to see the polytunnel and raised beds in full bloom. Outstanding efforts everyone...your hard work and commitment has clearly paid off and your shed is as well established as your onions! Haha. Great to see you all! Till next time.

ps...excellent work on the promotional material too. Mark has waited a long time to see his furry face made into a massive banner and poster campaign! Haha.
