Men's Sheds Cymru

Every single person who hears about the Men's Sheds movement immediately confirms that it is a wonderful thing. If you're not personally interested we can guarantee that you know someone or have somebody close to you that would love the opportunity to be part of a Men's Shed. So what exactly is a Men's Shed? Essentially it is a Social Enterprise set up by Men for Men, and it's all about tackling the growing problem of isolation in our male population. There are a great deal of men out there with lots of time on their hands and a great deal still to offer. This is a chance for men within communities to come together, join or set up a Shed of their own and enjoy being around other males, talking, dreaming, playing, planning, creating, fixing, building, changing and growing. No two sheds are the same and what goes on in a shed is determined by the people who belong to it. A Shed is it's own unique, self supporting social enterprise with its own governance, constitution and ethos. There are currently around 2000 sheds in Australia, 200 sheds in Ireland and many emerging sheds across Europe. We, as the Association of Wales are here to support existing Sheds and Shedders, Advocate the potential of new Sheds and support those who wish to join or start Sheds. The model promotes "health by stealth" and generally enhances the well-being of all males involved who gain a sense of belonging and purpose, feel useful, connected and a part of their community again. Sheds are outward facing and often engage in activity that benefits the areas they're in. Its a win-win situation. So, there it is in a nutshell. The movement is new to Wales and this is a period of enormous potential and rapid growth. Be a part of it! Shed happens. Get in touch with us to find a shed near you.... if there isn't one, we'll help you start one! We're looking forward to hearing from you. Team Men's Sheds Cymru.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) and Men’s Sheds Cymru is pleased to support the annual campaign for the second year running.
The focus of this year’s campaign is on bowel screening, with the aim of raising awareness of bowel cancer and the importance of completing a bowel cancer screening test kit.
Men’s Sheds Cymru is supporting the campaign by raising awareness of the NHS bowel Screening Programme in Wales.
In 2016 all existing sheds received a special Bowel Screening Awareness Pack, which contained useful information about bowel cancer and the importance of attending for NHS bowel screening. The pack also included a poster and leaflets which could be displayed in each Shed.
Bev Spiers, a founder member of the Pembroke Dock Shed, also spoke out about his personal experience of being diagnosed with bowel cancer through the screening test.
In Wales, 54% of men and women currently invited return their Bowel Screening Wales test kit, so raising awareness is very important.
Completing the free NHS kit can help reduce the number of people aged between 60-74 years diagnosed with bowel cancer, and increase the number of people who will survive. Finding cancer early gives you the best chance of survival.
• Further information about bowel screening can be found at: www.bowelscreening.wales.nhs.uk

We're delighted to share news of an award Men's Sheds Cymru received last week from the High Sherrif of Dyfed. Every year this honorary distinction is placed upon individuals and organisations who have made a significant contribution to charity and voluntary work within the community. It was wonderful to see the warmth with which Sheds were regarded by the hundreds of people who attended the event. Diolch yn fawr iawn!
