As expected the Men’s Sheds Management meeting held on Thurs 26th July at Summerhill in Maindee reluctantly concluded that it could not continue to support the Men’s Shed at this site. In order to continue the Men’s Shed at Maindee and apply for the various grants available to us, it was essential that we were able to form a Constituted Management Committee. Unfortunately after 7 months of strenuous effort, wide publicity and despite very broad verbal support from various agencies we had little actual commitment from the local community or agencies to take on the necessary committee roles.
In all it is estimated that some 20 days of man-effort went into the church site clearance and replanting, from MS members, Rotary and the Cadet Force. Also there were donations to the site from many sources including local nurseries, Growing Space and Asda in addition to the some £200 spent from Newport MS club funds ( raised at Newport AFC ). In addition there were also the commemorative roses replaced after the originals were removed with the overgrown undergrowth ( we were not informed of their presence ) and the new wheelbarrow. I’m sure that the Church will be grateful for the transformation that we have achieved in converting the overgrown space into a productive garden, albeit somewhat drought affected this year, and will now maintain it to the benefit of their members. We are also grateful to the Church in allowing us the use of their space. A few ‘ before and after ‘ images are attached to this post.
The Men’s Shed initiative in the Newport area can now move forward. Regular liaison meetings are planned for Newport City, whilst in Cwmbran a thriving community group have identified a potential site for their own Men’s Shed. All spin-offs from the Maindee initiative. So if you or your community group are interested in launching a ‘ Men’s Shed ‘ then do contact us, our team are ready to support you with whatever help you may need.

The next Management Meeting will be held at 2.00 pm on Thursday 26th July at Summerhill. Sadly this may be the last. In order to continue the Men’s Shed at this site in Maindee and apply for the various grants available to us, it is essential that we are able to form a Constituted Management Committee. Unfortunately after 7 months of strenuous effort, wide publicity and despite very broad verbal support from various agencies we have little actual commitment to take on the necessary committee roles. So if you feel that you are able to support the Men’s Shed in Maindee and secure its future do come along to this meeting or contact us via the email address on this page.

Newport Men’s Sheds was at the Maindee Festival this weekend ( the 7th July ). We offered plants and seedlings, mostly raised by shed members, for small donations. £30 was raised to bolster our funds so well done to all those attending on what was a very hot day.

Newport Men’s Sheds Garden Party
Our Garden Party was a resounding success. A big thankyou to the Church and all those that helped or donated plants and food to make the afternoon so memorable. A few of the many photographs taken are shown here. We were fortunate to have visits from Denis Spiller ( the National President of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland ) who planted a tree to honour the occasion and Frederick Hottinger the national lead for Men’s Sheds Cymru. As well as many potential new members, church members and local agencies, Maggie Hughes ( the Rotary District Governor ) and Eric Hewinson ( the Newport Uskmouth Rotary Club President ) also joined us.
We are now in the planning stages for our next event, a stand at the Maindee Festival in early July, so watch this space or better still come along any Thursday afternoon and join our growing membership.

Ready for Planting !
Planting has started. Our warm thanks go to Halse Nurseries, Growing Space and Anne Jackson-Bass for their marvellous plant donations. Other large plants came from Club funds. Heavy rain stopped play today ( Thurs 31st May ), so we’re going to finish the job on Sat 2nd June, doors open at 12.00. As usual all are welcome.
