The Rhyl Shed

The Rhyl Men's Shed provides a safe, supportive & friendly environment for men of all ages, backgrounds and capabilities to gather together and potter, tend the garden and poly-tunnel, do woodwork, craft and art projects (or whatever else we are interested in). We can learn, pass on knowledge, chat and make new friends. If we don't feel like working, that's OK too. We can play / do research on the laptops, read the paper (if someone brings one in) or have a chat, (or quiet chill) and a brew! We decide amongst ourselves what will happen on a daily, weekly and seasonal basis. The shed is run by the men for the men. We do not judge. We are individuals who have a right to be treated fairly and equally. Bullying and harassment is not tolerated. A supportive element is there to help us to promote and stabilise our mental, physical, emotional and economic well being. Care/support workers are welcome to come along and/or stay with their service users (and of course, to lend a hand!) The Rhyl Men's Shed open door policy means that we do not exclude any man (age 18+) on the basis of race, ability/disability, religion or age within the context of the groups existence and aims. We strive to maintain a safe physical environment and an inclusive and supportive social environment, but accept that certain restrictions may need to be put in place for the Health & Safety of the individual and the Shed as a whole. We do our utmost to be inclusive and make adjustments where it is feasible, safe and financially viable to do so. The rights and the decisions of individuals are respected at all times as is their privacy and confidentiality. You do not have to be referred to come along and join us though some of our members have joined us through a referral, be it a friend, a friend of a friend or through another organisation such as Communities First, Social Services, Support Workers or the NHS. Rhyl Men's Shed was the first Community Shed to be established in North Wales and has been in existence since September 2013. It is funded by the generosity of grants and donations (plus attendees contribute £1 per session towards the refreshments fund). The organisation is fully insured and constituted. Now you know a little about us, why not come along and see what it's all about for yourself!

AN AMAZING DAY AT THE SHED

We held the usual Monday morning basic skills literacy class (8 attendees), dug up the main crop of potatoes, picked runner beans, had a home grown salad lunch, held a table top sale, built and painted planters, made a winter weight poly tunnel for growing veg under during Autumn/Winter) and two of the lads Ryan and James made and cooked home made scones for us all (to a Facebook recipe - 4 cups s/r flour,300ml of single cream, 300ml of lemonade, cook at 200c for 15 minutes or until brownish .....).
To top it, all we had 27 members attend todays session - the highest attendance figure ever for one day!
Two guys visited us today and will be starting as members at tomorrows session.

Phew ......

A wet day meant the Fun Day activities went inside St Mary's but the fun continued unabated!
I've not edited any of the photographs which have kindly been supplied by Humphrey from 4theCommunity.
We hope the photos bring back happy memories of the day. Rhyl Men's Shed activities on the day are in a separate album.
If there is a photograph that you would like removing for any reason, please inbox and it will be taken down.
Note: Parents were aware of photographs being taken off their children and we got the OK to use them.

We've had a great Children's Fun Day even though the heavens did open a couple of times!
We made a splendid £93.20 for Rhyl Men's Shed funds with a Tombola, handbag sale (yes you read it correctly) and donations.
We (mainly Keith) made umpteen bird boxes and mini planters with the kids happily knocking in the nails (hours of violent banging!) and planting marigolds.
Woody sold two of his diaramas and two shell pictures.
Many thanks to the Shedders who came along and helped; Keith, Richard, Tony, Malcolm, Attie and Woody.
Thanks also to everyone who came along and made the Fun Day such a success.

2. the erection of the Scully Arch
3. planting out pumpkins, cabbages, cauliflowers & beans
4. the completion and planting up of our Floral Boat
5. a major donation to the Communities First Food Bank marking World Hunger Day
6. the sale off our first bird table
7. RMS has been added to Arriva Trains Wales list of Station Adopters for our planter rejuvenation work

April has been a very busy and varied month.
The Court Yard Garden has been reclaimed from the builders!
The 'boot room' now contains all the overalls and wellington boots
The new workshop new has electricity with multiple lights and sockets in use.
The poly tunnel is packed full of seedlings which are growing rapidly in the warm and sheltered environment
The allotment has sprung into life with potatoes pushing their way through, onions, shallots and garlic all have green tops and the carrots and parsnips are visible in rows.
In the raised bed we have 4 very good rows of radishes coming along well despite the poor temperatures.
Woodworking has continued with a new product being added by Keith by way of a standardised bird table and one is sold already
We also had our first BBQs of the year!
Finally, A few weeks ago Woody designed our logo which was approved by the guys. This has now been made into our very own Rhyl Men's Shed Pin Badge. It's available for a minimum donation of £1 which will go towards funding sew on badges for the overalls.

Come along and chill????
Ha!
These guys know no bounds - it is truly amazing what they can and willingly have achieved.
