Shoulder to Shoulder is a new opera created in partnership with Men’s Sheds Cymru

How do you beat loneliness? How do you learn to laugh again?

Funny, moving, and thought-provoking, Shoulder to Shoulder is an intimate chamber opera, made in partnership with Men’s Sheds Cymru, a charity that supports older men through loneliness, from the acclaimed company Swansea City Opera.

The opera is touring from 23 October – 4 November to venues in Clydach, Pentyrch, Brecon, Milford Haven, Borth, and Holyhead.

During Lockdown, Swansea City Opera collected the memories and stories of Men’s Shed Cymru members – “Shedders” – to create this joyful story of the power of friendship.

Swansea City Opera have been thrilled by the enthusiasm of Shedders and community choirs to bring Shoulder to Shoulder to life.

Shoulder to Shoulder has an acclaimed cast of singers and ensemble of musicians who’ve sung and played in world-famous opera houses, companies, and orchestras, including the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Welsh National Opera, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Soprano Jess Robinson who plays the role of Gwen is a BBC Welsh Cardiff Singer of the World 2022 finalist. At each venue on the six-date tour, Shoulder to Shoulder features the talents of a local community choir.

BBC Classical Music Online has sung the company’s praises: “Captivated within minutes.”

Opera is for everyone. Whether you’re an opera fan or new to opera, Shoulder to Shoulder promises to be an inspiring and uplifting evening out.
