Men's Sheds Cymru
A National Lottery Community Fund project. We help to develop new groups and support existing Men's Sheds across Wales.
The Squirrel’s Nest Men’s Shed & Men’s Sheds Cymru attended the Celebrating Communities event organised by the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales.
Contacts have been made with the Dementia Friendly Communities Co-Ordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society in Carmarthenshire & Pembrokeshire as well as arts4wellbeing based in Llandysul. We will follow up on both these contacts for joint working and their understanding of remote and rural communities.
The Big Lottery funded Centre for Ageing Better has produced a report on the benefits of making a contribution to your contribution in later life.
The report suggests that the benefits are greater for older people with fewer personal and social resources, lower educational attainment and fair health. Those who stand to reap more benefit are not the people currently most likely to contribute.
The report is available at: https://www.ageing-better.org.uk/news/people-likely-benefit-volunteering-least-likely-get-involved/
“Trapped in a bubble” is a report investigating the triggers of loneliness in the UK. Pleased to see that Men’s Sheds are considered a method of “restorative support” to help individuals reconnect with their community.
The full report can be found at http://www.redcross.org.uk/~/media/BritishRedCross/Documents/What%20we%20do/UK%20services/Co_Op_Trapped_in_a_bubble_report_AW.pdf
Mark Bond will attend this conference organised NHS Wales for Men’s Sheds Cymru. Mark will be available to explain progress and answer questions from delegates. Hoping that members of the new Men’s Shed group in Swansea based at 208 High Street Swansea will attend and forge new contacts.
